SUMMARY:QSU Research Methods Seminar: Robert Tibshirani\, Ph.D
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, April 1\, at 12:00 pm PST \nJoin the seminar at 3180 Porter Dr. (combined Room B107 & B136) \n*Lunch will be provided* \nZoom Link:\nMeeting ID:  996 4643 5133\nPassword: 593858 \n \nRobert Tibshirani\, Ph.D.\nProfessor of Biomedical Data Science and of Statistics\nStanford University \nUnivariate-guided Sparse Regression \nIn this talk Dr. Tibshirani will introduce “UniLasso”\, a novel statistical method for sparse regression. This two-stage approach preserves the signs of the univariate coefficients and leverages their magnitude. Both of these properties are attractive for stability and interpretation of the model. Through comprehensive simulations and applications to real-world datasets\, we demonstrate that UniLasso outperforms Lasso in various settings\, particularly in terms of sparsity and model interpretability. We prove asymptotic support recovery and mean-squared error consistency under a set of conditions different from the well-known irrepresentability conditions for the Lasso. Extensions to generalized linear models (GLMs) and Cox regression are also discussed. A special case of lasso\, “uniReg” is an interesting competitor to good ol’ least squares regression (Legendre\, 1805). \nThis is joint work with Sourav Chatterjee and Trevor Hastie.

SUMMARY:MLK Day Event
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fireside chat with Professor Lerone A. Martin and Dr. Joyce Sackey as they delve into Dr. King’s dream of equality through the lens of health equity. Inspired by the 2025 Health Equity Symposium\, which focuses on social and structural determinants of health\, this conversation will feature insightful commentary on advancements in clinical care\, particularly in the East Bay\, and how they address the disparities Dr. King fought so tirelessly against. \nEngage in a vital conversation about building a more equitable and just healthcare system for all. Don’t miss this opportunity to honor Dr. King’s legacy by working towards a healthier future. \nLearn more and Register
