Among movement\, locomotion is one of the most fundamental and universal to animals and humans. Locomotion is organised at many levels of the nervous system\, with brainstem circuits acting as the gate between brain areas regulating innate\, emotional\, or motivational locomotion and the executing spinal motor circuits. To be executed\, locomotion requires dynamic initiation and termination and appropriate directionally. This lecture will focus on recent advances that have elucidated the functional organization of brainstem command circuits in mammals needed to perform these roles. The lecture will provide a new framework for how basal ganglia circuits are acting via these brainstem circuits to elicit self-paced locomotion and how brainstem motor circuits may be used to define brain-wide networks involved in high-level behaviors. The seminar will be held in-person on the main Stanford campus with 3 satellite viewing locations in Stanford Research Park. \n🗓️ Feb 12\, 2026\nNeural mechanism linking interoception to decision-making\nKatalin Gothard\, MD\, PhD\nUniversity of Arizona | Host: Karen Parker (Social Neurosciences Research Program (Parker Lab)) \nInteroceptive signals convey information about the physiological state of the body to the brain and have been proposed to shape affect and decision-making. Yet it remains unclear how changes in body physiology alone are sufficient to bias complex decisions\, such as choices in an approach-avoidance conflict task. We manipulated the peripheral autonomic state of rhesus macaques using pharmacological agents with minimal blood–brain barrier penetration. During peripherally restricted\, sympathetic-dominated physiological states\, animals terminated mildly aversive stimuli earlier even at the cost of forgoing reward. These effects generalized across different aversive modalities while leaving ordinal food preferences intact\, indicating a selective effect of altered interoceptive afferents on avoidance. I will discuss the neural underpinnings of these behavioral biases in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and amygdala\, exploring how interoceptive states modulate neural representations of both decision commitment and spontaneous coping behaviors. The seminar will be held in-person on the main Stanford campus with 3 satellite viewing locations in Stanford Research Park. \n🗓️ Feb 19\, 2026\nLung-brain signaling in mental health outcomes\nStaci Bilbo\, PhD\nDuke University | Host: Karen Malacon (Monje Lab) \nThis seminar is co-presented by Psychiatry Grand Rounds | Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences \nKnowledge linking connections between the lung and the brain has been with us for millennia\, spanning ancient (ayurvedic) breathing practices aimed at breath awareness/control\, to the prevailing recognition in recent years that respiratory insults (e.g.\, infection\, allergens) can have lasting impacts on mood\, cognition\, pain\, and other aspects of brain function. Despite these links\, we know little about the mechanisms by which these two critical organs communicate. The lung has a small population of specialized sensory epithelial cells called pulmonary neuroendocrine cells (PNECs) that sit in clusters at the branch points of the major airways. PNECs are the first lung epithelial cell to differentiate during early development and have key morphogenic roles during the transition to an air environment after birth. Whereas PNECs share redundant immune secretary functions with several other lung cells\, they are the only innervated cells of the lung epithelium and were initially discovered based on hallmark secretary vesicles\, pointing to their neural signaling function. I hypothesize a primary function of PNECs is to communicate with the brain and are critical for the behavioral consequences of lung (dys)function broadly. To begin to investigate these questions\, we developed a model to efficiently ablate PNECs in mice and determined the brain and lung response to a common respiratory insult\, influenza infection. Our preliminary data suggests that lung activity detected via the PNECs is rapidly transduced to the CNS via vagal afferents\, which impacts brain function via the encoding of immune “engrams” (memories) within select brain regions\, which if reactivated\, can persistently impact behavior (e.g. anxiety). A primary goal of this research going forward is to comprehensively phenotype behavior (mood\, cognition\, pain) in the days and weeks after infection recovery and subsequent neural reactivation to determine the persistence of immune engrams within the brain. Then\, we will determine if we can modulate PNECs to impact immune engram formation/maintenance and alleviate behavioral consequences such as anxiety. The seminar will be held in-person on the main Stanford campus with 3 satellite viewing locations in Stanford Research Park. \n🗓️ Mar 5\, 2026\nMaking synapses with psychedelics\nAlex Kwan\, PhD\nCornell University | Host: Austen Casey (Heifets Lab) \nThis seminar is co-presented by Psychiatry Grand Rounds | Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences \nNumerous drugs have the ability to alter our perception\, cognition\, and mood. Some of these compounds\, such as ketamine and serotonergic psychedelics\, have also shown promise as treatment for mental illnesses. The behavioral effects are often long-lasting\, presumably because the drugs act on synapses and dendrites to induce plasticity in the brain. In this talk\, I will describe a series of studies from my lab aimed at understanding the mechanism of action of psilocybin\, using subcellular-resolution two-photon imaging\, in vivo electrophysiology\, rabies viral tracing\, and other molecular and behavioral approaches in mice.
