The seminar will be held in-person on the main Stanford campus with 3 satellite viewing locations in Stanford Research Park. \n🗓️ Nov 13\, 2025\nRewinding brain development to dissect cortical circuits \nRosa Cossart\, PhD\nINSERM\, Aix-Marseille University | Host: Anne Goettemoeller \nDevelopment shapes adult cortical circuits in many ways\, from the constraint of genetic programs to establishing the interaction between self-referenced representations and environmental signals in support of adaptive behavior. The adaptation of cortical circuits to the external world results from the modifications of self-organized circuits constrained by genetic programs\, in response to activity-dependent adjustments that occur at critical turning points throughout the developmental trajectories of individual animals. \nCentral to this process is the cortical circuit ability to differentiate between internally-generated and externally-driven inputs\, a function mediated by distinct circuits. We posit that these dedicated circuits emerge through a developmental process in which the brain learns to segregate self and non-self-signals via its interactions with the body and the environment. Disruptions to this developmental trajectory\, we argue\, may underlie disorders like autism and schizophrenia\, characterized by distorted world models. This presentation aims to unravel the emergence of functional cortical circuits over the course of development. The seminar will be held in-person on the main Stanford campus with 3 satellite viewing locations in Stanford Research Park. \n🗓️ Thurs\, Oct 16\, 2025\nNeural circuit mechanisms for memory and prediction \nAntonio Fernandez-Ruiz\, PhD\nCornell University | Host: Yun Hwang \nEpisodic memory involves learning and recalling associations between items and their spatio-temporal context. Those memories can be further used to generate internal models of the world that enable making predictions. While the circuit mechanisms implementing those computations are not well understood\, the hippocampo-cortical interactions have been implicated in both processes. Neural ensemble coordination across the hippocampus and associated cortical structures support learning and memory. Hippocampal ensemble reactivation broadcast memory representations to the rest of the brain\, a process that supports memory consolidation\, retrieval and planning. In this talk I will describe the neural circuit dynamics and plasticity mechanisms that support the formation and reactivation of internal models of the environment in behaving rodents. I will discuss our recent work showing how the sequential activation of cell assemblies is leveraged for planning upcoming spatial trajectories during memory-guided navigation and how their replay during sleep supports the selective consolidation of relevant memories\, as well as the generalization of task structures. The seminar will be held in-person on the main Stanford campus with 3 satellite viewing locations in Stanford Research Park. \n🗓️ Thurs\, Oct 9\, 2025\nLearning and memory mechanisms \nJeffrey “Jeff” Magee\, PhD\nBaylor College of Medicine | Host: John Huguenard \nUnderstanding how brains learn and remember remains among the most important challenges in science. Recent studies implicate a new form of synaptic plasticity\, named Behavioral Timescale Synaptic Plasticity (BTSP)\, in the generation of hippocampal activity patterns that are required for experience based learning and memory. BTSP is a strong\, bidirectional plasticity effecting synaptic weights over many seconds of time. It is induced by single dendritic plateau potentials\, as opposed to many action potentials\, and is thus capable of producing new place cells in one-shot. Plateau potential initiation is controlled\, at least in part\, by local feedback inhibition and an instructive input from a higher-order brain region that potentially links the plasticity to current experience. The novel credit assignment procedure at work in BTSP provides a non-standard mechanism for memory storage and retrieval that could mitigate the need for widespread synapse stabilization. In addition\, it may allow hippocampal networks to form both memories of specific behavioral episodes and to generalize based off past episodes.
