The seminar will be held in-person on the main Stanford campus with 3 satellite viewing locations in Stanford Research Park. \n🗓️ Feb 5\, 2026\nUnraveling brainstem circuits for movement: Insights into gait motor control and implications for treatment of gait disorders \nOle Kiehn\, DSc\, MD\nUniversity of Copenhagen | Host: Lele Cui (Shah Lab) \nMovement is the output of almost all brain functions. Among movement\, locomotion is one of the most fundamental and universal to animals and humans. Locomotion is organised at many levels of the nervous system\, with brainstem circuits acting as the gate between brain areas regulating innate\, emotional\, or motivational locomotion and the executing spinal motor circuits. To be executed\, locomotion requires dynamic initiation and termination and appropriate directionally. This lecture will focus on recent advances that have elucidated the functional organization of brainstem command circuits in mammals needed to perform these roles. The lecture will provide a new framework for how basal ganglia circuits are acting via these brainstem circuits to elicit self-paced locomotion and how brainstem motor circuits may be used to define brain-wide networks involved in high-level behaviors. The seminar will be held in-person on the main Stanford campus with 3 satellite viewing locations in Stanford Research Park. \n🗓️ Jan 22\, 2026\nPrecision estimation of large-scale network organization in the human brain\nRandy Buckner\, PhD\nHarvard University | Host: Zaki Alaoui (Baccus Lab) \nThis seminar is co-presented by Psychiatry Grand Rounds | Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences \nHuman association cortex is populated by a series of large-scale networks. In terms of organization\, the multiple networks form an orderly progression that radiates outwards from sensory-motor networks to transmodal association networks that underlie advanced forms of human cognition. In-depth analysis within individuals reveals anatomical details including that functionally distinct networks are intertwined throughout multiple zones of association cortex\, raising questions about how they evolved and how they differentiate during development. Interestingly\, it was found quite recently that monkeys\, including the genetically accessible marmoset\, possess association networks that recapitulate many of the human features. These parallels provide an opportunity to connect experiments in animal models of large-scale circuits to clinical interventions in the human. Recent work has translated these discoveries to optimization of clinical care. To do so\, I will draw together three lines of inquiry in mind\, brain\, and computation. I’ll begin with a line of inquiry into connective curiosity (“How do we connect bits of information as we walk about the world?”)\, then move into graph learning (“How do we build larger network models from those connections?”)\, and finally end in network control theory (“How is that model building constrained by the brain’s own connective structure?”). The seminar will be held in-person on the main Stanford campus with 3 satellite viewing locations in Stanford Research Park. \n🗓️ Nov 13\, 2025\nRewinding brain development to dissect cortical circuits \nRosa Cossart\, PhD\nINSERM\, Aix-Marseille University | Host: Anne Goettemoeller \nDevelopment shapes adult cortical circuits in many ways\, from the constraint of genetic programs to establishing the interaction between self-referenced representations and environmental signals in support of adaptive behavior. The adaptation of cortical circuits to the external world results from the modifications of self-organized circuits constrained by genetic programs\, in response to activity-dependent adjustments that occur at critical turning points throughout the developmental trajectories of individual animals. \nCentral to this process is the cortical circuit ability to differentiate between internally-generated and externally-driven inputs\, a function mediated by distinct circuits. We posit that these dedicated circuits emerge through a developmental process in which the brain learns to segregate self and non-self-signals via its interactions with the body and the environment. Disruptions to this developmental trajectory\, we argue\, may underlie disorders like autism and schizophrenia\, characterized by distorted world models. This presentation aims to unravel the emergence of functional cortical circuits over the course of development. The seminar will be held in-person on the main Stanford campus with 3 satellite viewing locations in Stanford Research Park. \n🗓️ Thurs\, Oct 16\, 2025\nNeural circuit mechanisms for memory and prediction \nAntonio Fernandez-Ruiz\, PhD\nCornell University | Host: Yun Hwang \nEpisodic memory involves learning and recalling associations between items and their spatio-temporal context. Those memories can be further used to generate internal models of the world that enable making predictions. While the circuit mechanisms implementing those computations are not well understood\, the hippocampo-cortical interactions have been implicated in both processes. Neural ensemble coordination across the hippocampus and associated cortical structures support learning and memory. Hippocampal ensemble reactivation broadcast memory representations to the rest of the brain\, a process that supports memory consolidation\, retrieval and planning. In this talk I will describe the neural circuit dynamics and plasticity mechanisms that support the formation and reactivation of internal models of the environment in behaving rodents. I will discuss our recent work showing how the sequential activation of cell assemblies is leveraged for planning upcoming spatial trajectories during memory-guided navigation and how their replay during sleep supports the selective consolidation of relevant memories\, as well as the generalization of task structures. The seminar will be held in-person on the main Stanford campus with 3 satellite viewing locations in Stanford Research Park. \n🗓️ Thurs\, Oct 9\, 2025\nLearning and memory mechanisms \nJeffrey “Jeff” Magee\, PhD\nBaylor College of Medicine | Host: John Huguenard \nUnderstanding how brains learn and remember remains among the most important challenges in science. Recent studies implicate a new form of synaptic plasticity\, named Behavioral Timescale Synaptic Plasticity (BTSP)\, in the generation of hippocampal activity patterns that are required for experience based learning and memory. BTSP is a strong\, bidirectional plasticity effecting synaptic weights over many seconds of time. It is induced by single dendritic plateau potentials\, as opposed to many action potentials\, and is thus capable of producing new place cells in one-shot. Plateau potential initiation is controlled\, at least in part\, by local feedback inhibition and an instructive input from a higher-order brain region that potentially links the plasticity to current experience. The novel credit assignment procedure at work in BTSP provides a non-standard mechanism for memory storage and retrieval that could mitigate the need for widespread synapse stabilization. In addition\, it may allow hippocampal networks to form both memories of specific behavioral episodes and to generalize based off past episodes.
