Mar 12, 2025 | Announcements

Dear 3172 Porter Building Colleagues,

Scope: This is to inform you that beginning on 02/01/2024 the OFPM has contracted ABM Janitorial to remove and dispose all Polystyrene items for recycling Polystyrene blocks and sheets from packaging and shipping can be recycled into new products if kept clean and collected separately from landfill waste. To help keep polystyrene out of the landfill, Stanford’s waste service provider, Peninsula Sanitary Service (PSSI), created a polystyrene collection program. This program reduces waste, conserves resources, and helps Stanford achieve its goal of zero waste by 2030, defined as 90% diversion from landfill.

ABM Janitorial will remove Polystyrene on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Please place the polystyrene in a visible designated for the ABM staff to remove it.

Impact: Once the Polystyrene is removed from the SOM buildings and disposed into the designated container, PSSSI will then take the clean polystyrene to Recology in San Francisco where it is densified and re-manufactured into door and crown moldings, picture frames, and side and deck board. To date, over 1,000 pounds of polystyrene have been diverted from the landfill helping Stanford achieve its goal of zero waste by 2030.
